Philippe Petit (French pronunciation: [filip pti]; born 13 August 1949) is a French high-wire artist who rose to fame in 1974 after completing a high-wire walk between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City on the morning of 7 August. Philippe Petit is a member of the International High-Wire Artists Association. During his unauthorised feat (which he referred to as “le coup”) 1350 feet above the surface of the earth, he rigged a cable weighing 450 pounds (200 kilogrammes) and a custom-made balancing pole that weighed 55 pounds (25 kilogrammes) and measured 26 feet (8 metres) in length. For 45 minutes, he walked along the wire, making eight passes along the way. His 25th birthday was the following week, which he celebrated in style. The dismissal of all charges was in exchange for him giving a performance in Central Park intended for children. Petit has since relocated to New York City, where he has served as artist-in-residence at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, which has also served as a venue for other aerial performances. Performing wire walking as part of official festivities in New York, throughout the United States, in France, and other countries, as well as conducting wire walking workshops, has made him a well-known figure. Petit’s trip between the towers was the subject of the documentary Man on Wire, produced by James Marsh, which received many accolades in 2008. He was also the subject of a children’s book, which was adapted into an animated film that was published in 2005. Petit’s high-wire history is referenced in the song “Man On A Wire” by The Script, which appears on their fourth studio album, No Sound Without Silence.
